myDailyPhoto 2.5 Released

February 11th, 2009 2:21PM EST by matthew

It's been two weeks since we release myDailyPhoto version 2.5, but the list of launch-critical pages didn't include the blog. Now that I've finally gotten around to reviving it I figured I should probably post about all of the changes.

Logo, Branding, & Colors, Oh My!

As always the most noticed part of a website upgrade is the new look, and it's been a rather drastic change for the new release. The old logo is long gone after nearly two years of use, and I must say, I'm incredibly happy about that. Not many people know this, but I hated the name of this project; it was my last choice, but the other founders out-voted me. I told them that the name didn't work with a logo and promptly showed them an example... as fate would have it, that's the logo we used.

The new logo is a better illustration of what this site is all about; the standard comment bubble has a camera aperture inside of it. Sure, there's no calendar or anything else having to do with dates, but it does show that we're a community of photographers. The name says the rest.

While orange and blue and white are great if you're a fan of the Florida Gators, it didn't blend so well for a website. It looked cheap. Our new blue, black, grey and white scheme keeps things simple and in-offensive to the eye. It also lends itself to the glossy look.

Pages / Bug Fixes

We also took the time to re-work all of the pages to fix a few of the nuances of the site; people were having trouble with a few things, understandably so. The 'User Home' page is gone, replaced by a simple secondary navigation. You can also update your excuse from anywhere on the site, thanks to a nifty little modal box. Comments can now be of any length and include any characters (minus HTML of course). The list goes on and on, but I won't bore you.

Missing Items

Unfortunately change often brings about the removal of some beloved items; we understand this, and we're working to provide suitable alternatives. Yes, we know there's no way to see the latest pictures from your friends. Yes, we know the mobile sites are temporarily gone. Yes, the random profile button has been removed. I ask that you bear with us until we have time to come up with a viable solution.

However, if you feel that something should be re-added, changed, etc, please don't hesitate to shoot me a comment or e-mail. I always take peoples opinions into account.
